4 signs of a vaccine shoulder injury

You recently went to your doctor or local pharmacy and a vaccine was administered. Something did not feel quite right. You expressed discomfort and were told it is normal and the pain will go away, but it doesn’t and the pain worsens. Here are some signs to look for if you believe you have a shoulder injury from a vaccine: 1. You have pain which began within 48 hours after the administration of a covered vaccine, and has continued or worsened over the following days, months, or years. 2. The vaccine was incorrectly administered. Typically, the SIRVA occurs because the needle was placed too high up on the arm causing the needle to hit the bursa rather than the muscle. 3. Symptoms are not resolving and are affecting normal activities of daily living. Prior to the administration of the vaccine, you had no difficulty with the use of your shoulder/arm and now you are having limitations with normal daily tasks and activities. Adverse reactions such as swelling or soreness are not going away on their own. Typically, the pain will worsen and you may experience the following:

  • Severe, sharp or stabbing pain;
  • Numbness and/or tingling;
  • Limited range of motion;
  • Disturbed or difficulty with sleeping on the injured side of the body;
  • Difficulty with the use of injured shoulder/arm;
  • Difficulty lifting or raising the injured shoulder/arm;
  • Difficulty dressing and undressing;
  • Difficulty with overhead activities;
  • Difficulty bathing;
  • Difficulty carrying groceries;
  • Difficulty carrying items over the shoulder such as a handbag; and
  • Difficulty carrying children.

4. You were diagnosed with a shoulder injury. Before the vaccine, your shoulder was perfectly fine. All of a sudden, you are diagnosed with one the following shoulder injuries:

  • Adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder;
  • Bursitis;
  • Shoulder impingement;
  • Partial of full rotator cuff tear;
  • Tendonitis; or
  • Brachial neuritis
