Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disease whereby the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system and causes muscle weakness, numbness and tingling in the upper and lower extremities including the arms, legs, and face. In extreme cases GBS may cause paralysis. Although, Guillain-Barré Syndrome symptoms can present as early as one day post-vaccination, symptoms more commonly appear around three to several weeks post-vaccination.

Common symptoms related to Guillain-Barré Syndrome

A person suffering from GBS may experience the following symptoms:

  • ​Numbness and/or tingling in the hands, feet and face
  • Muscle weakness in the legs, arms and face
  • Difficulty talking, chewing, swallowing
  • Difficulty walking or lifting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Back pain
